So here it is finally… a new song from us. A happy love song, inspired by the wicked gospel grooves of Reverend Al Green and his band, plus Dr. John and other New Orleans-soul.

It’s the first song we recorded at Josh’s recording studio in Hollywood, Hayloft Studios. And we have our very special guest and the always incredible Ed Lyon playing the Hammond and piano.

Nikki, Josh & Rich

We’re really liking the funky grooves, soul harmonies and the lyric themes we’ve got so far. One looks like it’s going to be a big ballad.

Other than that, Rich is putting the finishing touches on his first drum instruction DVD.  Josh is keeping busy at his recording studio in Hollywood, Hayloft Studios, with his pug George being the cutest studio dog ever. And Nikki’s enjoying her day gig as a guitar teacher: writing her first rock guitar instruction book, teaching lots of guitar students around LA, and being a guitar host on the Mahalo website.

This Wednesday, we’re coming up from our recording hibernation to play a short set at M Bar in Hollywood: 1253 N. Vine st, Hollywood, CA 90038. $10 cover + $10 food or drink minimum.

Most of the new songs are a lot more funk and r&b-infuenced than some of the more Beatles-flavored tunes we’ve done, like “Distance” (or the earlier tunes that Rich and I did before Josh came into the band.) There’s a fast r&b-tune with Hammond organs called “Fire But No Spark”, for instance.

Anyways, just giving you an update on the band! As for myself, I just started teaching video guitar lessons on Mahalo.com. By next week, you’ll see me showing how to play “Superstition”, “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “What’s Going On” and even “Low Rider”!

Here are a few pics pics from Hayloft Studios – Josh’s new recording studio in Hollywood.

Next week we’re going into Josh’s brand-new Hollywood studio, Hayloft Studios, to record two new songs that’ll be released in May.
We’ll reveal the titles: “You Are So Good For Me” and “The Problem Ain’t The Man.” We’re still walking down our soul-rock path in terms of the sound, and these two songs
have even more flavors of r&b, gospel and pure funk than our previous songs. Ed Lyon will still be playing keys. We’ll probably also add horns to one of the tunes…

Nikki is writing her first rock guitar instruction book for a major music publisher; Rich just recorded his first drum instruction DVD for Alfred Publishing, and Josh moved his recording studio into a brand-new space in the middle of Hollywood, so he’s now able to record whatever he wants whenever he wants (check out www.hayloftstudios.com for more info.)
